Turf for Surf
Turf for Surf is a class designed for dogs and owners wishing to compete for their Water Rescue Dog title. This class will involve basic obedience and water training fundamentals taught out of the water.
Why train on land for water?
Aside from the on-land basic control section of the water test, training basic fundamentals on-land is necessary. Training in the water too soon can be problematic; the water can very distracting and can cause the handler to loose control over their dog.
Training all exercises on-land will help water-training move faster and become more solid.
The best part of land training is that is can be worked on year-round! In the winter this class will keep you and your dog busy until you can get into the water in spring.
What You Will Learn:
- Basic Obedience: Heeling off-lead, the recall and stay.
- Retrieving Fundamentals: Creating drive, "Take it" and "Hold" commands, delivering to hand, retrieving various objects (bumper, life jacket, boat cushion), dead retrieve
- Go-outs
- Marking
Training Equipment Needed:
- High-value training treats
- Clicker (optional but recommended)
- Flat collar & 6 foot leash
- Long line (recommended)
